Honoring Heroes: Memorial Day & Military Appreciation Month

This year, Memorial Day will be celebrated on May 31st. Every year, Memorial Day is recognized on the last Monday of May and honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Memorial Day is one of the many holidays that make up Military Appreciation Month including Armed Forces Day, Military Spouses Day, and VE Day.

Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day originated following the Civil War but did not become an official federal holiday until 1971. Following the Civil War, many begun to hold tribute to fallen soldiers during the springtime. Prior to Memorial Day, Decoration Day was celebrated in May by the Northern States to recognize those who had died in the Civil War. Southern states had their own holiday to recognize their fallen up until after World War One.

Honoring All Who Serve on Memorial Day

While Memorial Day was originally created to recognize those who had passed in the Civil War, it has evolved to recognize all military personnel who have died in all wars. Specialty Environmental wants to recognize the ultimate sacrifice that was given by men and women who have lost their life protecting our country. We also want to thank all the men and women who serve who put their lives at risk.
