March has been recognized as the national ladder safety month. National ladder safety month is the only movement that is exclusively focused on the promotion of ladder safety at home and at work. During the month of March, there will be experience and heightened awareness of the importance of using ladders safely, including resources, training, and national dialogue.
Incorrect ladder usage is the main cause of ladder injuries
In lieu of this, we thought we would offer 7 safety ladder tips for both you, your crew, and at home.
Tip #1
Be sure to inspect all the ladders at your job sites and at home. If you have any doubts that your ladder may not meet the proper criteria, please remove the ladder from service or from your home.
Tip #2
Consider the ladder weight rating. Please remember to keep in mind the key element here is to include both your weight and the weight of anything you might be carrying. When you are selecting the proper ladder weight rating you will not only include your weight but the weight of all the equipment and accessories you are carrying too.
Tip #3
Remember that a taller ladder does not mean a higher weight rating. In order to ensure you are using the correct ladder, at home or at work, check the duty rating of your ladder. The duty rating is the maximum safe load capacity of the ladder, this would mean a fully clothed person’s weight plus any tools or materials they are carrying and wearing.
Tip #4
Consider the type of material the ladder is made of to ensure proper usage of this equipment, for example, fiberglass vs aluminum vs wood.

Avoid high-traffic areas when setting up your ladder

Ensure you have set up your ladder on a stable, level surface.
Tip #7
Keep your ladder at an angle to your work when using it and firmly lock both spreaders when opening the ladder.
Tip #8
Be sure to store your ladder properly. You will want to store your ladder in a sheltered area that is away from heat, weather, and corrosive materials.
